"If there is only one place I could photograph on earth it has to be Shark Bay. Shark Bay World Heritage site is one of the world's greatest wilderness treasures, located on the edge of the Western Australia continent. For me, this area has the most diverse natural colour to offer of any location I have come across during more than a decade of travelling the world photographing.
This study was made whilst flying over Shark Bay in a small Cessna 172 plane, 4500 feet above sea level. The seabed displays natural colours in their purest quality, and here we have a shallow seafloor covered and shaped by the rich and warm Indian Ocean. The image was captured at 90 degrees to the ocean's surface. To do this, I asked the pilot to remove the aircraft doors from the co-pilot seat and flew wide open. To get the perfect angle, I directed the pilot to perform an aerobatic 2G spin so I could directly face downwards with no obstruction from any plane parts. It's fair to say that I have acquired the taste of gravity pulling hard on me. I feel like I'm driving a racing car! The central curved pattern in this image is created by the growth of a unique local seagrass species which acts as the foundation in supporting one of the most bio-diverse habitats on this planet.
The central focus of this image is, of course, an interesting curved line which wiggles from one corner through the frame and divides the image in half. I sometimes reflect how rare it is for us to see a curved line so free and poetic with all of the straight concrete lines and hard edges that surround our daily lives. For me, this is an escape into a dream. If I take a closer look, I know why I like it even more... because with a little romantic imagination it resembles the beauty of the female form. The shades of blue and cyan have a pure and smooth transition with textures that mirror an abstractive oil painting." Yi Sun
