"I felt something of a fraud making this photograph thinking that I was simply making a record image of someone else's art. Finally, I decided to set the camera up and then remained there for a good long while before I pressed the shutter. The light was flat and it seemed to me that the heart of the altar needed some diffused light to pronounce its splendour. My request was answered as the sun shone on a pale surface behind me sending a patch of modest diffused reflected light directly on to the altar. I left perfectly content from one of the most magical regions on earth."
