"In 1908, a worker Zacharias Lewala found a diamond on the ground's surface and soon a village sprung up as prospectors came to seek their fortune. In 1958, the village was abandoned with the remnants of mansions reduced to surreal rooms half filled with brown sand, rusty relics and rattling corrugated roofs.
I have known Kolmanskop for perhaps 20 years and I have known this bed for as many. The old blue wallpaper behind became my cloudy sky helping to pronounce the rusty yellowing iron bedstead crusting with 50 years of neglect. I suspect that every so often another piece of it quietly falls to the ground, finally disintegrating until there is no trace. I am so happy to have made a photograph of it before it does so."
