"Red Crown Cranes are symbolically important to the Japanese soul. They are featured on the Japanese 1000 yen currency note and in the logo for Japanese Airlines. In the North of Japan, on the island of Hokkaido, there are various preserves and sanctuaries where cranes are fed. Their nesting grounds are also close by where they can propagate in safety. I have had opportunities to visit many of these sanctuaries and photograph. I was extremely fortunate with this particular image of a single crane feeding. I photographed from a very low angle to eliminate foreground and background details. The composition is as minimal as I could make it, like Haiku poetry. Even though the negative was made in 2005, I only printed the image very recently while working on a book of my bird images, Oiseaux - Michael Kenna, which was published by Xavier Barral, France in 2019.” Michael Kenna 2020
