"I passed this particular schoolyard a number of times during the early mornings and late evenings on my way to photograph the local mills. The playground path and wiggly lines always intrigued me. Were they put there for drunk driving tests or bicycle proficiency exams? Perhaps they were necessary markings for some exotic local game which the students played? To satisfy my curiosity, I seriously considered enquiring at the school, but eventually concluded that I really didn’t need or even want to know the answer. The question was far more satisfying as a catalyst for my imagination. Much later, when I had printed, exhibited and published this image, an art critic pointed out the great importance of the open window. He waxed lyrical about its psychological significance. To tell the truth, when I made the photograph I was so focused on the lines that I hadn’t even noticed the window! As Garry Winogrand, a wise photographer, pointed out - sometimes you need to photograph just to see how something looks when it is photographed." Michael Kenna
