The breathtaking, natural beauty of the wild and rugged Orkney Isles stays with you once you have experienced it. Exposed to the full force of the Atlantic weather, the cliffs at Birsay see spectacular conditions when stormy weather hits. I took a walk along the cliffs during a particularly wild day at new year. The wind was so fierce I had to sit down and stay low in order stay upright against the force of the wind. Even holding the camera up to my eye was a battle and the spray coming up and over the edges of the cliff face meant the camera was periodically drenched. Sometimes the hardest part of shooting my images is just working in the conditions. I managed to capture this image just as a fleeting spot of sunlight came across the sea.
