"After much wandering around this smallish area, I found that I was rejecting more than accepting possible compositions. To my mind, it is always worthwhile trying to identify and explain to myself why a photograph that at first sight appeared to have merit, is finally rejected. I need to have explanation via identifying what conflicting elements are presented to me that despite much wrestling with all the component parts, deny me ownership of my photograph. The granite rock and tree had to be seen together; they had to be bound together with each commanding mutual status. Thankfully, the light was harsh (rarely desired) which allowed the depth of the shadowed side of the rock to be softly illuminated as a consequence of bounced light reflection from the surrounding rock. This reflected light then assisted to reveal texture on the shadowed side of the rock. The top sliver of rim light helped to rescue the rock from looking flat. I was very pleased that the shape and surface area of the tree to a degree resembled the same oval shape of the rock. To my mind, both rock and tree represent two of the earth's great fundamentals."
