The strength of the three trees either side was to be found in ensuring the tree trunks be black and colour would have been so out of place. A hoar frost lasts only a short while as any slight temperature rise away from freezing results in a total disappearance of the frost. Fifteen minutes later the magical frost had gone. I was so thankful that the sheer weight of the frost ensured the branches joined in the middle as much as they did. If there had been a gap, that would have been an unacceptable compromise. The white parallel band of lit snow played a crucial role to pronounce the trees." Charlie Waite
