"The competitiveness within the classic scene is legendary. The best yachts attract some of the most gifted helmsman, tacticians and navigators in the sport. Assembled by ambitious owners with big budgets and high expectations the crews are world class. The rivalry between Moonbeam IV and Mariquita in the Big Boat Class has rumbled on for years and I was lucky enough to witness a very close race on the final day of the Voiles de Saint-Tropez in 2013. Neither helmsman was giving an inch as the two yachts headed through this tiny gap between the mark and Seche Rock a few hundred metres from the finish line. The wind had unexpectedly increased from 10 to 30 knots and both boats were absolutely on their limit with too much sail up for the conditions. Retiring from the race was out of the question so both yachts kept going through the choppy seas and spectator boats. It's a strange emotion knowing that you are taking super dramatic pictures while at the same time being aware that things could go very wrong on the water, as the yachts are stretched beyond their design."
