"The Old Gaffers Festival in Yarmouth has grown from humble beginnings in 1959, when just three boats raced in the first event held in the Solent. The ever popular festival now attracts over 120 boats and thousands of spectators. This photograph of the fleet sailing past Hurst Point lighthouse was shot on a 400mm lens, thus foreshortening the scene and condensing the action. I really like the slightly misty light and the random collection of gaff rigged boats. My marine photography career started in 1996 with an Old Gaffers regatta in West Mersea, so this image takes me back to those early days."
