"When I was training to be a photographer back in the early 1990's I was advised by my tutors to try and assist a few top-notch still life photographers. Their reasoning was simple: the discipline of still life and the lighting techniques involved would be invaluable for the rest of my career. I duly took myself off to London and after a shaky start worked for some seriously good still lifers who taught me the value of planning, lighting, meticulous preparation and always trying to exceed your clients expectations. With sailing photography it's difficult to apply all of these rules as the situation on the water is continuously changing. However, when I photograph from the land you can begin to plan and take control of the composition. This shot of Mariquita sailing behind St. Catherine's lighthouse was completely premeditated. I knew exactly the lens, the composition, and the time of day. All I needed was the yacht to come through at the right angle with her sails well set. Thankfully she arrived right on queue."
