Wild Rose, built at WoodenBoat School, is a dory. Simple yet functional, dories were born out of the desire to expand fishing off the Grand Banks. These small flat-bottomed boats quickly became popular among fishermen; they were inexpensive to make, serviceable and stackable on the decks of the large fishing vessels. Until the mid-1880's a dory's frame was made from naturally curving wood. In 1887, with the advent of the dory clip, boat builders were able to join two straight pieces of wood, making a tougher, durable and more cost-efficient dory.
