Launched on April 28th 1871 in Christmas Cove Maine the Lewis R. French is the only survivor of the thousands of Coasting Schooners built in Maine in the 19th century. She is the oldest windjammer in America and a National Historic Landmark. The Lewis R. French has continuously worked during her century under sail, carrying cargos such as lumber, firewood, bricks, granite, lime and even Christmas Trees along the Maine coast. On April 28th 1996 she was re-christened at 125 years old. Today, she continues to sail, registered as the only surviving Coasting Schooner built in Maine.
