This is the Flying Jib and Fore Topmast of the Lewis R. French. Launched on April 28, 1871 in Christmas Cove Maine the Lewis R. French is the only survivor of the thousands of Coasting Schooners built in Maine in the 19th century. She is the oldest documented vessel in the windjammer fleet. The Lewis R. French has continuously worked during her century under sail, carrying cargos such as lumber, firewood, bricks, granite, lime and even Christmas Trees along the Maine coast. In 1996 she was re-christened at 125 years of age. She continues to sail, now as a National Historic Landmark, registered as the only surviving Coasting Schooner built in Maine.
