"One of the benefits of light wind days is the yachts will invariably put up as much sail as they can to go as fast as possible. On this particular day the start of the race had been delayed as the committee waited for the sea breeze to come in. From memory we waited for a couple of hours. These pre-start delays can actually be good times to photograph as the yachts float around in close proximity to each other with all their kit up trying to persuade the committee to give them the gun. Once the race begins you'll be lucky to get the yachts this close together. This picture isn't dramatic or spectacular but I love the composition perhaps because it came to me at such an unexpected moment. The other element to note is the mast man high up in the rigging of Mariette the schooner. Depending on the race conditions he may stay up there all day."
