Understanding colour theory is one of the most fun and fascinating parts of learning photography, in particular how the eye and the brain work together and respond to different colours. Equally important is an understanding of how different colours sit together in an image, so that you can use colour successfully to achieve a balanced and pleasing composition. Using colour successfully requires you to:

-understand the colour wheel which demonstrates the relationships between different colours in an image

-understand and identify contrasting and complimentary colours, and learn how to achieve balance in an image

-understand and identify advancing colours which draw the eye, and receding colours which don’t grab our attention

-understand how the intensity of light changes colour, and how the eye and the brain work together in response to light and shade in an image

-learn the benefits of using a limited colour palette with just 1 or 2 colours to produce compositions with more wow factor

-learn how to achieve a balanced composition when there are lots of colours in an image

The course is packed full of examples demonstrating both the correct use of colour, and also the incorrect use so it’s obvious and easy for you to learn the key points. Time is set aside to review your own photos to identify where you are doing well, and where you can improve.

A thorough working knowledge of colour theory is an often neglected area when learning photography, and one of the three most important building blocks for students of photography to focus on; along with light and composition.
