"A single door always invites the opening of it. The conical shape above lent the door its importance. It was the shades and layers of white upon white that appealed to me and having pared away the parts of the image that held no interest, I was finally able to feel brave enough to place my blue door at the heart of the photograph. There is a trend to purify photographs of all redundant imperfections and whilst this can sometimes be necessary, there is an accompanying danger of sterilizing the photograph. But the raw was needed here with the decay, cracking and staining of the walls being very much part of what I wanted to see in detail. Sometimes, things can be too clean."
